The first time my MIL came to visit, she insisted on helping out.  I would try to get to doing the dishes before she could; however, a couple of times I didn't manage this.  Well, I took a glass to get a drink of water and soap bubbles formed when the water hit the glass.  Needless to say, I rinsed it out and continued on my way.

DH didn't believe me when I said she's not getting the dishes clean or rinsing them off properly (or at all for that matter).  He did the same as me, but didn't notice the bubbles in his glass.  He took a sip and was almost sick.  He believed me then.   ;)

Then again, there are only two people in my home. Could be different with a large family.

Yes, it's different.  There's no way we could leave the tap running to wash all the dishes at my in-laws for instance without being wasteful.

I think not rinsing is so disgusting.  I keep dishware from the kitchen at work in my office so I can be sure that what I'm using has been properly rinsed.

I love baths!!  [smiley=smitten.gif]

I guess I'm a filth wallower. :P I don't generally shower before or after a bath, unless I need to wash my hair.  If I was really dirty or sweaty from working in the garden or running or something I would tend to take a shower rather than a bath.

Hehe! Then I'm a filthy wallower, as well! I completely agree and think it's silly to shower before or after a bath. If you've got to do that, then just take a shower to begin with, for pete's sake! That seems like a complete waste of resources to do both almost simultaneously. If I were exceptionally sweaty or dirty, then I would take a shower instead of a bath, but on the average day, I really don't think I am going to get that disgusting that I can't have a soak in the tub without having to rinse off with the shower afterwards.

I want to know how dirty people are who bathe and believe they are sitting in their own "filth".  I don't think I've ever gotten that dirty over the course of the day where while I'm taking a relaxing soak at night that I would think I am bathing in a cesspool.

Exactly.

Remind me not to have most of you as roomates. I'd probably gross most of you out on a consistent basis and you'd throw me out or you'd move out.   :)

(Though, I haven't managed to gross J. out yet. Amazingly.)

Sometimes I even wash my dishes in my old bathwater, just to conserve water.  ;) :P ;D

Used to.  Went native.  Not anymore.  It's not a battle that is worth fighting to me.

No.  And neither does DH, who does most of the dishes.  (I do rinse the coffee pot - or I did, until the carafe got broken.  :P)

And every time this comes up on here, people come on here & cite all these perfectly sensible reasons why you ought to rinse.  But seriously, if it were that big a deal, an awful lot of really healthy people I know would have been sick or died by now from germs or soap poisoning.  ;)

I find the people-who-don't-get-sick are generally the ones who worry least about things like this.  It's building up your immunities & tolerance to things that you keeps ya upright.  Just sayin'.   ;D

This is exactly how I feel.  I have went "native" as well by not rinsing, and have not suffered any ill-effects.  I was in the "rinsing camp" when I first moved over, but after 6 years, not rinsing doesn't bother me anymore.

I'm a filthy bath wallower as well.  I only shower when I'm washing my hair which is 1-2x a week.  I think I'm clean and nice smelling, if I do say so myself.  ;)

I do that as well, but only after I've peed in the bath!  ;D

Seriously though, this reminded me of a conversion a few months ago. DW had received an email about strawberries and how it was important to clean them because of tiny mites on them almost impossible to see. And the article suggested that the best way was to use soapy water and I said, "oh I don't want strawberries washed in soapy water" and she said "but you are ok not rinsing the plates".....hmmm, I think she got me there!  ;D

I only ever take baths if I am achy from too much working out or from being ill.  I used to take them after forest fires because my pores would be completely clogged with ash all over and then the water really would turn black.

I love baths.  If it didn't cost so much to have the hot water on in this house, I'd take one everyday!  Though I think if I were exceptionally covered in dirt and/or sweat, I would choose a shower but I'm rarely if ever in that kind of a state.  Nevertheless, add another to the filthy wallower list!  :D

With the dishes, I rinse because it is what I was taught to do by both my mom (who keeps a spotless kitchen) and by my jobs working in cafes and delis as a teenager and in college.  It's just one of those things that would always nag me in the back of my head if I didn't rinse.  I'd say it's more of a psychological thing than really being worried about getting ill.  To me, they're just not done until they've been rinsed.

I'd also like to add, that there is a distinct difference between a non-rinser and a person who is just terrible at doing dishes.  One can rinse all they like and still not get the dishes clean!

To each their own!

But if its his mother, he must have been eating and drinking from her soapy dishes for a large portion of his life. Why would he get sick then and not before?

He wasn't sick...just tasted a mouthful of soap from this particular glass.  We didn't have a washing up bowl like she was used to, so I'm not sure if that contributed to how the dishes were washed when she visited.  Also, he was out of her house for over 15 years at that point, so I'm not sure if he got used to how he washed up.  No matter what it was, he finally believed what I was saying about them not being done properly.
