I can't really read in the car, either. I try on planes and trains, but, usually, I just fall asleep on either one. And riding in cars, if I'm not careful and get too bored.

Man, I wish my problem was more like this. I will actually vomit if I look at a map for more than 2-3 minutes in a car and sometimes if I try to play certain video games or PC games or whatever. It's pretty bad. It starts with a weird headache and then immediately my stomach churns and I can be sick in an instant if I'm not careful. It happened to me all the time as a child, and I still get that headache now and then and have learned to stop immediately whatever I am trying to do so I can avoid being sick. But I can read in a train (yay!) or on a large plane (thank God!) but I don't even try on the tiny planes because there is usually just too much turbulence.  :-X

Your symptoms are exactly what happens to me, if I'm doing the same things. It's like my body can't deal with movement while reading or doing other things. It bugs me, though, so, I'll usually end up just looking out the window because other wise, I will become ill like you do. Which is also why I shut my eyes, which leads to falling asleep during the ride and not realising that we've arrived. It's not always fun. I've missed many bus stops and trolley stops in the States because I let myself fall asleep like this.  :-X

I'm reading Children's Unspoken Language,by Gwyneth Doherty-Sneddon. Super technical, lots of bibliography notations, but interesting and a good read at the same time.

Moved on from the technical book. It's been replaced by Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher. She's Scottish, and her books are always set some where in the UK, usually Scotland or Cornwall, and it's always idyllic and a good break from reality. Sadly, she retired from writing in 2000.

I just finished Major Pettigrew's Last Stand yesterday and thought it was just OK so I would be interested in your final opinion. :)

The first three-quarters I really enjoyed, but I felt it was let down by the trite ending.  Now I am reading The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova.  I really like the slow pace of her books and how the mysteries unfold.  I'm about halfway through this one, and very absorbed in it.

Rosamund Pilcher is a very well-known Cornish writer. Not Scottish. Although she does live in Scotland now. She was born in the village where I live.

I *love* her! She's one of my very favourites.  I'm reading the newest Scott Westerfield (Leviathan) right now.

Sixpence House by Paul Collins. It's a sort of bibliographical autobiography that takes place in Hay-on-Wye. Of interest for his comments on adjusting after a move from San Francisco to Hay, e.g. description of submerging in a big old British bath as opposed to a shower. I started it ages ago but must have been sidetracked.

After casting about for awhile on what to read (& what I'm in the mood for)...picking up one book, reading a bit, putting it down, then another, then another...

I am finally getting stuck into Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy.  I think my reading habits might be the opposite of some of you...I'd rather read a heavy, depressing book in the summertime when the weather is pleasant-ish, and then light fun reads in the wintertime when the weather is depressing out.  Keeps me on balance emotionally.

Also, classic lit often catches my interest a lot sooner than a lot of modern fiction does.  Hmmm.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

Hehe... did I do that?  ;)  :-* They are far too addictive. It's ridonkulous. They should be shipping the newest one to me this week... I can't wait!

I watched the miniseries when it was one last year (The Take). Very dark! But I haven't read the book. You will have to tell me how it is.

I have to get through the dreaded Tenderness of Wolves first. Otherwise, I will report back. I bought The Take after the miniseries for my last holiday and didn't get to read it.
