Okay, to be honest, I'm allergic to peanuts and haven't had Boston Baked Beans in 25 years.  But if the have Red Hots, I can compare ther price to Amazon...

It's so annoying to see "25c" on the box and know they'll cost a ridiculous amount.  :/
If you can't find them cheap I'll bring back a box at Thanksgiving.  Maybe you will get them in time for Easter.

At our previous adress, the local parish put out a monthly bulletin to every house in the parish (nothing like that here, sadly).  It contained local news, personal notices (births, deaths, weddings, new people moving in, people moving out...), and the occasional article to introduce a speaking coming to the area.  One time, an article started with "Whether you love trees or loathe them,..." and I was shocked.  Who could hate trees?!  At the very worst, I could see how one might be indifferent to them.  But to have actual dislike?  What?

I, too, love the inside trees!

Ohohoh!  Larrabee, I must share this thing I saw on Facebook with you, and Jimbo's thread seems the perfect place for it:

It's the Faraway Tree!  :D

I have a few trees in pots in the garden. I bought too many saplings a while ago so it's an easy way to keep them manageable. Thought I would bring in some of the birches over the summer and it was just gorgeous for a while, they are around 9 feet tall now. Problem was, I didn't get them outside again early enough... leaves everywhere!   ;D

We are planning to eventually build a greenhouse in a part of our property that gets good sun for much of the year, and we don't use that area currently, anyway.  There's space in front of where we want to put the greenhouse where my husband suggested an "orchard" of fruit trees in planters.  We're going to turn the concrete stableyard into a garden!  Someday.  :)

That's a fantastic idea.  :D There is special dwarf rootstock you can get, especially for potted trees.

And that's not a huge job either so you could get started this bare root season if you wanted to.  Sooner they're planted, sooner you're picking fruit! :)

Ooh, thanks, larrabee.  We were planning to build our own planters, but we can get started on that any weekend, and then we'd be all set.  So... I know I want granny smith apple and maybe a sweeter variety for my husband, and one of the hazelnut trees in their online offering, and probably a cherry (I don't know which one is good, though!)... we'd also like to grow avocado.  In the greenhouse, we'll do tomatoes, chillies, cucumbers, maybe okra.  Outside in raised beds, I want potatoes and garlic.  And in the kitchen, I'll have herbs (oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary).  Oh!  Salad!  I'll need greens/lettuce!

I want to grow so many things, but I've not actually grown anything before, except this basil I've been mainaining in my utilikitchen.

Yeah, I was going to recommend some pots but I thought you would be making your own!
When choosing your varieties, as well as checking the rootstock, check whether they are self fertile or need a pollinator, it should tell you on the listing.
My husband likes Granny Smiths so I planted two of those, they need plenty of sun I believe and are not as easy as some of the others. I have my first apples this year but they are tiny so far!

I don't buy from here as I think they are too expensive but I used this website a lot when researching which fruit trees to buy. It's really excellent!  ;D

Would the fact we live in a rural area and there seem to be plenty of healthy bees around be sufficient if a pollinator is needed?  Or would we need to have a beekeeper come round to "service" our trees?

Tiny apples are fine!  I'm making tarte tatins and other cooked/baked treats with mine.  How many years did it take to get to fruit?

You don't just need the bees, you need a compatible tree for cross-pollination if the one you choose is not self fertile. So if you choose a particular tree which is not self fertile, you would also need to choose another tree  which will do the job.  :)

The Granny Smiths fruited the very next year but none stayed on the tree this long!

Ahhh... duh.   I did mention I've never grown anything before, right?

Oh, except these!  Only, all I've done is keep the plant alive after its near death experience.  I just dropped those segments into my leftover fun beverage from Saturday night.  A little extra sour should make it pretty awesome tonight.  :)

Good for you! I know you said these were sour but they do look like they would be sweet!  ;D

I know... it's so frustrating.  They look like the sweetest little morsels, and my hands smell like oranges from handling them, but they taste not unlike lemons.  Last time I tasted it by just licking it... today, I popped a whole segment in my mouth.  I was not 100% happy with that decision.  :)
